T-Shirt Size Guide for Men: How to Pick the Right Fit Every Time

Buying t-shirts online without trying them on first is a gamble unless you know exactly how to read a size chart. Here's how to get it right every time, whether you're shopping regular fit or oversized.

The three measurements that actually matter

Most size charts list chest, length, and shoulder width. Chest is measured straight across the garment, one inch below the armhole, then doubled — this tells you how roomy the tee will be. Length is measured from the highest point of the shoulder to the bottom hem — this determines whether a tee sits at the hip or lower. Shoulder width is measured seam to seam across the back, and it's the most important number for oversized fits since a dropped shoulder seam is what creates that silhouette.

How to measure yourself

Use a soft measuring tape. For chest, wrap it around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms, keeping the tape level. For length, measure from the top of your shoulder down to where you want the tee to end. Compare these numbers directly against the garment's measurements, not just the S/M/L label — sizing varies a lot between brands.

Regular fit vs. oversized: how to choose

If you want a classic, tailored look, go with your true size on a regular fit chart. If you're after the oversized streetwear silhouette, size up one step from your regular size — but check the shoulder measurement specifically, since that's what makes or breaks the drop-shoulder look.

When in doubt

If your measurements fall between two sizes, size up for oversized styles and size down for fitted ones. A slightly loose oversized tee still looks intentional; a slightly tight one just looks like the wrong size.
